I play acoustic, and I compose tunes. My first guitar was a Rogue dreadnaught...which I don't think was solid wood. I liked that I didn't have to worry about damaging the guitar (b/c it was easy to replace), and it's sound was imperfect and lead to a lot of pleasant surprises, while recording. The sound seemed more balanced across the thin strings and boomier on the bass. ...and it sounded better to me, with my voice, when I recorded.
I tried other guitars, in store, and there were only a couple of guitars that I liked as much...a $200 Laguna, and the $3,000 Gibson J-45.
